The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Dietetics

B.S. in Dietetics and Nutrition

Description

The program in dietetics and nutrition provides an academic path for students to enter careers or advanced programs in dietetics and nutrition.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 120

Goals/Mission Statement

The mission of the dietetics and nutrition and program is to prepare a diverse community of students who will be prepared academically and professionally to achieve success in postgraduate studies such as dietetic internships, graduate school and/or dietetic-related careers. Students will be able to analyze current academic and research literature, value lifelong learning, participate in community-based service learning activities, and demonstrate professional ethics.

General Education Requirements

See the General Education/Core Curriculum for the School of Applied Sciences. Students in this major, however, must take Bisc 102/103 OR 160/161 OR Bisc 206 to fulfill the "Human Biology w/Lab." Students must also take Bisc 210 OR Bisc 333 for the "Additional Science w/Lab" requirement.

An additional 20 hours are required in the following courses: Chem 105/115, Chem 106/116, GB 370, Mgmt 383 OR NHM 466, Spch 102, 105 OR Bus 271, Writ 250.

Other Academic Requirements

A verification statement documenting successful completion of all undergraduate course requirements is required for graduates to gain acceptance into accredited dietetic internship programs.

Emphasis - Dietetics

Description

The dietetics emphasis is designed for students who are seeking a career as a registered dietitian nutritionist.

General Education Requirements

Students must meet all general education, additional support, and core NHM class requirements. Students must have department approval to add this emphasis.

Other Academic Requirements

Students in this emphasis must earn a grade of "C" or better in all NHM classes. Students completing a B.S.D.N. degree with the dietetics emphasis will receive a verification statement that will allow graduates to apply to accredited dietetic internship or coordinated master’s programs. Graduates may also use the verification statement to take the exam leading to the credential of nutrition and dietetics technician, registered (NDTR).

First Year Writing II 3 Complete one of the following courses with a passing grade: Liba 102, Writ 102 or Hon 102.
3 hrs literature 200+ 3 Complete 3 hours of literature at the 200 level or higher with a passing grade.
3 hrs Arts Appreciation 3 Complete 3 hours in the area of fine or performing arts. Choose from art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. Acceptable freshman or sophommore-level courses are: AH 101, AH 102, AH 201, AH 202; Music 101, Music 102, Music 103, Music 104, Music 105; Dance 200; and Theatre 201.
Soc 101 3 Complete Soc 101 with a passing grade.
Psy 201 3 Complete Psy 201 with a passing grade.
3 hrs statistics course 3 Sucessfully complete a statistic course from the following list of courses: CJ 202, Math 115, Econ 230, Bus 230 or Psy 202.

General Education II

3 hrs humanities or fine arts 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours in humanities chosen from the following areas: African American Studies, classical civilization, gender studies, philosophy, modern or ancient languages, religion, or southern studies. Or, successfully complete 3 credit hours in the area of fine arts chosen from the following areas: art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.
