The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

M.S.W. in Social Work

Description

The M.S.W. is a professional degree that prepares a student to work with individuals, families, and communities in administrative or direct care positions in private practice, hospitals, city, county, state, or federal social services agencies. Students pursue either a regular track or advanced placement track, depending on their background.

Goals/Mission Statement

The M.S.W. program mission, in keeping with the university’s emphasis on excellence in teaching, research, and service, is to prepare competent, effective, and ethical social work professional leaders who are equipped to develop social work knowledge and to provide leadership in the development of service delivery systems. This process involves a thorough grounding of students in both theoretical and practice frameworks on which the professional development of social work clinical practice is based at the advanced level. The faculty emphasizes a commitment to enhancing human well-being through alleviating social problems and emphasizing diversity and social and economic justice with systems of all sizes at the local, national, and global levels.

Course Requirements

Students must complete the requirements for either the regular track or advanced placement track.

Emphasis - MSW Adv Placement Track

Description

The advanced placement track for the M.S.W. is designed for highly qualified students who have completed a B.S.W. from a CSWE-accredited program within the past five years.

Course Requirements

Students in the advanced placement track for the M.S.W. must complete 36 hours of social work courses, 30 hours of clinical practice courses, and 6 hours of electives (from among the set of listed courses). No thesis or final oral examination is required.

M.S.W. in Social Work

Select an emphasis Student must enroll in one of the MSW emphasis areas: MSW Regular Track or MSW Advance Placement Track.
SW 623 - C min 3 Complete SW 623 with a grade of C or better.
SW 624 - C min 3 Complete SW 624 with a grade of C or better.
SW 630 - C min 3 Complete SW 630 with a grade of C or better.
SW 640 - C min 3 Complete SW 640 with a grade of C or better.
SW 650 - C min 3 Complete SW 650 with a grade of C or better.
SW 660 - C min 3 Complete SW 660 with a grade of C or better.
SW 680 - C min 3 Complete SW 680 with a grade of C or better.
SW 683 - C min 3 Complete SW 683 with a grade of C or better.
SW 686 - C min 3 Complete SW 686 with a grade of C or better.
SW 687 - C min 3 Complete SW 687 with a grade of C or better.
GPA requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Applied Science Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The dean's office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The dean's office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.
