The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Law Enforcement

B.S.C.J in Criminal Justice

Description

The course of study leading to the B.S.C.J. degree offers students the opportunity to study law enforcement, corrections, or homeland security/emergency management and the administration of justice.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 124

Goals/Mission Statement

Our mission is to educate students in a learning environment conducive to excellence in meeting the complex challenges present in justice- related services. Our faculty's goal is to expand the knowledge base and to integrate cutting-edge information into the learning experiences of students. In addition, the Department of Legal Studies' mission is to extend service to our constituents to enhance learning, program development, and justice-related service in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.

General Education Requirements

The general education requirements for the B.S.C.J. degree include Engl 101 (3), Liba 102 or Engl 102 (3), 200-level literature (6), humanities (3), fine arts (3), history (6), sociology or political science (3), social science (3), Math 115 and a more advanced mathematics course (6), natural science with lab (6-8). Also, a student must take general electives to bring the total hours to 124.

Students must complete a minor.

Course Requirements

The B.S.C.J. degree requires 48 credit hours of criminal justice courses. The following 18 hours of course work are required of all criminal justice majors:

CJ 100: Introduction to Criminal Justice (3 hours) CJ 300: Ethics in Legal Studies (3 hours) CJ 322: Criminal Justice Communications (3 hours) CJ 399: Social Justice and Community Service (3 hours) CJ 490: Criminal Justice Internship (3 hours) CJ 499: Colloquium in Criminal Justice (3 hours)

The remaining 30 hours of major course work are taken under the student's choice of one of the following emphasis areas:

Corrections Emphasis CJ 120: Introduction to Corrections (3 hours) CJ 270: Juvenile Justice (3 hours) CJ 320: Correctional Treatment Strategies (3 hours) CJ 410: Criminal Procedure (3 hours) CJ 422: Probation, Parole and Community Corrections (3 hours) CJ 444: Law of Corrections (3 hours) 12 hours of criminal justice electives

Homeland Security Emphasis CJ 115: Introduction to Homeland Security (3 hours) CJ 285: Foundations of Terrorism (3 hours) CJ 376: Elite Forces and Special Operations (3 hours) CJ 400: Homeland Security Operations (3 hours) CJ 435: Terrorism in the 21st Century (3 hours) 15 hours of criminal justice electives

Other Academic Requirements

For majors in this field, a minimum grade of 2.5 must be maintained on all criminal justice course work.

Requirement Hours Description
First Year Writing I 3 Complete Hon 101, Writ 100 or Writ 101 with a passing grade.
First Year Writing II 3 Complete one of the following courses with a passing grade: Liba 102, Writ 102 or Hon 102.
3 hrs Arts Appreciation 3 Complete 3 hours in the area of fine or performing arts. Choose from art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. Acceptable freshman or sophommore-level courses are: AH 101, AH 102, AH 201, AH 202; Music 101, Music 102, Music 103, Music 104, Music 105; Dance 200; and Theatre 201.

General Education II

Requirement Hours Description
6 hrs history 6 Complete 6 hours of History coursework with a passing grade.
3 hrs humanities 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours in humanities chosen from the following areas: African American Studies, classical civilization, gender studies, philosophy, modern or ancient languages, religion, or southern studies.
3 hrs social science 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours in social science course work chosen from anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, or sociology.
3 hrs sociology/political science 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours in sociology or political science.
6 hrs literature 200+ 6 Complete 6 credit hours of literature at the 200 level or higher.
6 hrs math 115+ 6 Successfully complete 6 credit hours of Math (Math 115, Math 121, or more advanced). Neither Math 245 not Math 246 can be used to fulfill the math requirement.
6-8 hrs science 6 Complete 6-8 hours of natural science courses with labs from the following areas: biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or astronomy.
2 science labs 8 Successfully complete at least two science laboratory courses. Courses may be chosen from the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology and Geological Engineering, or Physics and Astronomy.

15 hrs criminal justice elective 15 Successfully complete 12 credit hours of criminal justice (CJ) electives. Courses may be not chosen from any criminal justice course that is being used for the Law Enforcement emphasis or part of the 6 required CJ courses (100, 220, 300, 399, 490, and 499).
