M.M. in Music
Description
The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases: 1) performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice; 2) music education; 3) choral conducting; 4) musicology; 5) music theory; 6) ethnomusicology; and 7) collaborative piano.

Emphasis - Music Education
Description
The M.M. degree with an emphasis in music education is designed to give the student advanced training in music and K-12 music education and/or prepares the student for study at the doctoral level.

Other Academic Requirements
In addition to course work, students must complete a thesis or pass a final written comprehensive examination.
I. Thesis
A. A student must be in full standing to enroll in Mus 697 (Thesis). Students may choose to (1) write a thesis or (2) take additional music education course work and complete a written comprehensive examination.
B. For information concerning format, procedures, and specifications of thesis, consult the Graduate Student's Handbook and A Manual of Theses, Doctoral Essays and Dissertations (available at the Graduate School).
C. Students must be enrolled for at least 3 hours during the semester in which they intend to graduate.
D. If a thesis is written, a thesis committee is formed by the major professor in consultation with the student and the Graduate Program Coordinator. The committee shall consist of the major professor, another representative of the student's emphasis, and a graduate music faculty member from outside the student’s area of emphasis.
II. Comprehensive Examination
A. Early in the semester in which the student intends to graduate, the major professor, in consultation with the student, shall formulate a committee of graduate music faculty members to administer the written comprehensive exam or thesis defense.
B. The Graduate Program coordinator should be contacted to set a date for the defense or comprehensive written exam.
C. The thesis must be presented to all members of the committee in its completed form at least two weeks prior to the end of the semester.
