The university has occupied a position of educational leadership not only in the state but also in the South and the nation. It was a charter member of what is now the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, a regional accrediting agency; helped found the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges; and pioneered the accreditation of high schools in Mississippi.

The Department of Music is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The doctoral program in clinical psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The Patterson School of Accountancy's undergraduate program has been accredited since 1944 by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The school's master's program has received separate accounting accreditation since May 1983 by the AACSB. The Mississippi School of Accountancy was one of the first schools in the country to receive separate accounting accreditation at both the bachelor's and master's degree levels. The school is also a full member of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy.

Graduates from the teacher preparation program of the school meet all requirements for teaching certificates in Mississippi and in most of the other states. For students interested in teaching certificates in states other than Mississippi, adjustments in the required program may be made.

The M.A. program is aligned with program guidelines as outlined by the Council on Academic Standards (CAS) of the American College Personnel Association. Every four to five years, the program faculty conducts a self-study of the program to assess its alignment with standards from CAS. This maintains a relevant and current program for students.
The M.Ed. in counselor education's academic and experimental requirements meet the accreditation requirements of the Council for the Accreditation of Counselor and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
The M.Ed. in education leadership is accredited by NCATE and ELCC.
The specialist program in professional counseling is located in the counselor education program in the Department of Leadership and Counselor Education in the NCATE-accredited School of Education. The program's academic and experiential requirements meet the accreditation requirements of the Council for the Accreditation of Counselor and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
The Ed.S. program follows the standards of NCATE and ELCC.
