UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Description

This degree program is designed to prepare a student for entry into the Pharm.D. professional program.

Goals/Mission Statement

On the baccalaureate level, the school shall foster an environment where students can learn and apply the principles and theories related to the pharmaceutical sciences and acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes in their chosen discipline such that each can enter and succeed in a professional career in the pharmaceutical sciences, or continue studies in areas including, but not limited to, the Doctor of Pharmacy program or graduate studies in the pharmaceutical sciences.

General Education Requirements

The general education/core requirements for the B.S.P.S. degree include Writ 100 (101), Writ 102 ( Liba 102); Bisc 160, 161, 162, 163; Bisc 206/207 (Bisc 310/Phcl 344), Bisc 336; Chem 105, 115, 106, 116, 221, 222, 225, 226; Econ 202; Math 115, 261; Phad 395 (Phil 328); Phcg 321; Phcl 343 (Chem 471/473), Phcl 344 (Bisc 330); Phys 213, 223; Spch 102 (105); 18 hours of electives that must include 6 hours of behavioral/social sciences; 12 hours of humanities and fine arts, with at least 3 hours from each area; humanities selected from 200-level English literature; history; African American studies, classical civilization, philosophy, religion, Southern Studies 101, 102, Honors 101, 102, Gender Studies 103, 201, 311, 390; fine arts selected from AH 101, 102, 201, 202; Mus 101, 102, 103, 104, 105; Danc 200; Thea 201, 202; Liba 130, 204, 314. Courses listed in parentheses are an acceptable alternative to the immediately preceding course(s).

Course Requirements

The first professional year (P1) requirements include Phcy 400 (Becoming a Pharmacist); Phcy 401 and Phcy 402 (Foundations in BMS I and II); Phcy 411 and Phcy 412 (Physiology/Pathology I and II); Phcy 421 and Phcy 422 (Pharmaceutics & Calculations I and II); Phcy 431 and Phcy 432 (Social & Administrative Pharmacy I and II); Phcy 441 and Phcy 442 (Pharmacists Patient Care Process I and II ); Phcy 451 (Pharmacogenomics); Phcy 452 (Pharmacoimmunology); Phcy 481 and Phcy 482 (Pharmacy Practice Applications I and II); Phcy 460 (Personal and Professional Development I); and Phcy 461 (IPE Collaboration I); Phcy 470 (Community IPPE I); and Phcy 471 (Institutional IPPE I).

Other Academic Requirements

Progression and retention criteria for early entry students and regular entry students, as well as financial obligations, liability/malpractice insurance, immunizations and assessment requirements, are detailed in the School of Pharmacy Student Handbook.
