The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Ed.S. in Counselor Education

Description

The Ed.S. in counselor education is designed specifically for school counselors. Completion of this degree will partially fulfill requirements in the state of Mississippi for AAA school counselor licensure.

Course Requirements

The Ed.S. in counselor education requires 18 hours of course work to include Coun 653-Group Counseling Practicum Coun 682-Family Counseling Coun 674-Diagnostic Systems in Counseling One 3-hour elective and 6 hours of Coun 695-Internship

This set of requirements is built upon the following courses for the M.Ed. in counselor education (48 hours). The student may be required to take these courses if any of them are not in his/her record: Coun 539, 570, 594, 601, 605, 621, 643, 680, 683, 672, 686, 690, 688, 693, and 695.

Emphasis - School Counseling Leadership

Description

The Educational Specialist degree in counseling is a 30-credit-hour, online curriculum designed to provide advanced training for professional school counselors in elementary, middle, and high school settings. This advanced degree program will focus on training school counseling district-level leaders who use data, build partnerships, and advocate for all students. Additionally, this program will assist students to meet the requirements for a higher-tiered educator licensure (e.g., MS AAA). Opportunities for counselors in school settings to seek other advanced credentials, such as National Certified Counselor (NCC) status will also be available.

Course Requirements

The Ed.S. program is available for students who already hold a master's degree in school counseling. The program entails five semesters of part-time graduate study and has four primary foci:

(1) Provide training in school leadership, student advocacy, and supervision, (2) Prepare students to meet requirements to obtain a higher-tiered educator's license, (3) Prepare students to further their knowledge and understanding of leadership and advanced school counseling models, (4) Provide students with further opportunities for advanced credentials such as National Certified Counselor (NCC).

Other Academic Requirements

Admissions Requirements:

License/Certification: Must hold current and active individual state license (or certification). Licenses accepted include LSC and/or LPC. Licensed school counselors must submit their state certificates from their State Department of Education.

Educational Degrees: Must have earned a master's or higher school counseling or mental health degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

School Counseling Experience: Must have completed at least one year of professional school counseling experience in a K-12 setting.
