Emphasis - Physical Acoustics
M.S. in Physics
Description
Graduate work in physics is planned primarily to meet the needs of students who are looking forward to professional careers in physics, either as teachers or as research physicists. The M.S. degree requires a thesis project based on original research.
Minimum Total Credit Hours: 30
Course Requirements
The M.S. in physics requires 24 hours of suitable graduate coursework and 6 hours of thesis (Phys 697). At least 12 hours of the graduate coursework must consist of physics courses numbered 600 level or higher. At least two courses must be taken from the list of core and breadth courses used for the doctoral degree.
Other Academic Requirements
Students are required to participate in the teaching of physics lectures or laboratories as part of their graduate training.
Emphasis - Physical Acoustics
Description
For the M.S. with emphasis in physical acoustics, all of the above requirements apply as well as the following requirements. Students must take Phys 511 (Acoustics Seminar), Phys 521 (Acoustics), Phys 532 (Advanced Acoustics Laboratory), Phys 605 (Advanced Acoustics) and Phys 709 (Mechanics I). Students must also take at least two courses from the following group: Phys 525 (Ultrasonics), Phys 637 (Fluid Dynamics), Phys 710 (Mechanics II) and Phys 725 (Solid State Physics I).
