M.M. in Music
Description
The Master of Music is an advanced professional degree designed to develop a particular area in music to a high level of specialization. The university offers the M.M. with the following emphases: 1) performance in woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments, piano, and voice; 2) music education; 3) choral conducting; 4) musicology; 5) music theory; 6) ethnomusicology; and 7) collaborative piano.

Emphasis - Music Performance
Description
The M.M. degree with an emphasis in performance is designed to prepare a student to become a professional musician (performing as a pianist, woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrumentalist, or vocalist) and/or prepares him/her for further graduate study or professional training. The performance emphasis can be completed with a concentration (option) in either piano, vocal, or instrumental.

Other Academic Requirements
In addition to coursework, students must complete a recital and must pass a final written examination.
I. Recital
A. A student must be in full standing to enroll in Mus 695 (Recital).
B. Students must be enrolled for at least 3 hours during the semester in which they intend to graduate.
II. Comprehensive Examination
A. Early in the semester in which the student intends to graduate, the major professor, in consultation with the student, shall formulate a committee of graduate music faculty members to administer the oral examination.
B. The Graduate Program coordinator should be contacted to set a date for the comprehensive examination.
C. The committee must be formulated prior to the recital so that the members may attend.
D. Comprehensive exam topics will include prepared recital notes, discussion of historical performance practices, the literature of the student’s performance area, pedagogy and techniques, appropriate repertoire, and questions on music history and music theory. Rubrics will be provided for each topic area.
