M.Ed. in Counselor Education
Description
The M.Ed. in counselor education must be completed with an option in clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) or school counseling (SC). The program requires satisfactory completion of courses and course experiences, development of basic counseling skills, performance in practicum and internship, and demonstration of specific clinical competencies beyond class requirements.

To complete the M.Ed. in counselor education, a student must complete the following core courses and also complete specific courses for the specialization option in clinical mental health counseling or school counseling.

Other Academic Requirements
Mastery of the content knowledge is assessed in many ways throughout the program. One specific milestone for assessing student’s mastery of content knowledge is the program comprehensive examination. All master’s degree students in the counselor education program are required to earn a passing score on the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) in order to graduate from the program.
In addition to demonstrating mastery of content knowledge, students must also demonstrate development of basic counseling skills and demonstration of counseling and track-specific dispositions and competencies beyond class requirements. All master’s degree students in the counselor education program are required to successfully complete practicum and internship in order to graduate from the program.
Emphasis - School Counseling
Description
The M.Ed. in counselor education/school counseling option requires that all students successfully complete a range of program experiences. Graduates of this program should be prepared for counselor positions in K-12 schools.
