The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Paralegal

B.S.L.S. in Law Studies

Description

The law studies program is designed for the student who wishes to pursue a career as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 120

Goals/Mission Statement

Our mission is to educate students in a learning environment conducive to excellence in meeting the complex challenges present in justice- related services. Our faculty's goal is to expand the knowledge base and to integrate cutting-edge information into the learning experiences of students. In addition, the Department of Legal Studies' mission is to extend service to our constituents to enhance learning, program development, and justice-related service in Mississippi, the region, and the nation.

General Education Requirements

See the General Education/Core Curriculum for the School of Applied Sciences. Students in the law studies major are allowed to take Math 120 to fulfill the College Algebra math requirement.

An additional 18 hours is required in the following related subjects: 3 hours of history, Pol 101 (3 hours), Phil 103 (3 hours), 6 hours of the same modern or ancient language, and Spch 102 or 105 (3 hours).

Course Requirements

The B.S. in law studies degree requires the following 18 semester hours of LA courses: LA 201, 204, 205, 303, 304, and 305.

Other Academic Requirements

For majors in this field, a minimum grade-point average of 2.5 must be maintained on all law studies coursework.

Emphasis - Paralegal

Description

The paralegal emphasis will provide students with the experiences, knowledge, and skills for careers as paralegals.

In addition to the 18-hour law studies core, students who select the paralegal emphasis must complete the following 21 hours of LA course work:

All students in the paralegal emphasis must choose a minor. The legal studies minor will not be allowed for paralegal studies majors.

General electives may be needed to meet the degree requirement of 120 college credit hours.

First Year Writing I 3 Complete Hon 101, Writ 100 or Writ 101 with a passing grade.
First Year Writing II 3 Complete one of the following courses with a passing grade: Liba 102, Writ 102 or Hon 102.
3 hrs literature 200+ 3 Complete 3 hours of literature at the 200 level or higher with a passing grade.
3 hrs Arts Appreciation 3 Complete 3 hours in the area of fine or performing arts. Choose from art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. Acceptable freshman or sophommore-level courses are: AH 101, AH 102, AH 201, AH 202; Music 101, Music 102, Music 103, Music 104, Music 105; Dance 200; and Theatre 201.
Soc 101 3 Complete Soc 101 with a passing grade.
Psy 201 3 Complete Psy 201 with a passing grade.
3 hrs statistics course 3 Sucessfully complete a statistic course from the following list of courses: CJ 202, Math 115, Econ 230, Bus 230 or Psy 202.

6 hrs modern/ancient language 6 Successfully complete at least 6 hours in one modern or ancient language.

15 hrs Paralegal Studies electives 15 Successfully complete an additional 15 credit hours in Paralegal Studies (LA). LA 495 is strongly recommended.
