The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Pharmacognosy

M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Description

The M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences can be completed with an emphasis in environmental toxicology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, or pharmacy administration.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 31

Course Requirements

Requirements for each emphasis area are given in the respective program description sections. Each emphasis area requires students to complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis.

Emphasis - Pharmacognosy

Description

The M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences with emphasis in pharmacognosy involves the study of bioactive natural substances found in terrestrial and marine organisms.

Course Requirements

Requirements for the M.S. with an emphasis in pharmacognosy include 1. Seminar on Topics of Interest in Natural Products (Phcg 543, 643) 2 hours; 2. Natural Product Chemistry (Phcg 627, 628), 6 hours; 3. Selected Topics in Pharmacognosy (Phcg 620): Introduction to Molecular Cell Biology, 6 hours.

The master's candidate will present a minimum of 24 hours of credit in course work past the baccalaureate in addition to 6 hours in thesis (Phcg 697). The student will need to select at least two additional elective courses, at least one of which must be selected from offerings outside the department.

An M.S. candidate must present two seminars, one on a selected topic and one involving his/her thesis defense.

Other Academic Requirements

A thesis based upon experimental work in the general area of pharmacognosy is required.
