UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES


The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

M.M. in Music

Degree Requirements

The academic regulations for this degree program, as entered in the University of Mississippi Catalog, are in effect for the current or selected academic year and semester. The University of Mississippi reserves the right to 1) change or withdraw courses; 2) change rules for registration, instruction, and graduation; and 3) change other regulations affecting the student body at any time.

M.M. in Music

Requirement Hours Description
Select an emphasis Student must enroll in one the M.M. in Music emphasis areas: choral conducting, music education, or music performance.
GPA requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Liberal Arts Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The Dean's Office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The Dean's Office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.

Emphasis - Music Performance

Mus 520 - C min 3 Complete Mus 520 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 619 - C Min 3 Student must complete Mus 619 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 620 - C min 3 Complete Mus 562 with a grade of C or better.
history/literature/theory/comp 3 Student must complete at least 3 additional hours in either music theory/composition or music history/literature.
History/literature 3 Student must complete at least 3 semester hours of music literature or history as approved by his/her GPC/Chair
music education elective 3 Student must complete at 3 hours of music education electives chosen from the following courses: Mus 523, Mus 524, Mus 525, Mus 536 or Mus 551.
music elective 5 Student must complete at least 5 semester hours of music electives as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.
Pass written exam Student must pass the written exam.
Theory/composition 3 Student must complete at least 3 semester hours of music composition or theory as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.
Thesis vs non-thesis 6 Student must complete either 6 hours of thesis credit (Mus 697) or 6 more hours of music education course work.

Mus 562 - C min 3 Complete Mus 562 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 613 - C min 3 Complete Mus 613 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 695 - C min 2 Complete Mus 695 with a grade of C or better.
Voic 521 - C min 2 Complete Voic 521 with a grade of C or better.
Choral ensemble 1 Student must complete at least 1 semester hour of choral ensemble as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.
history/literature/theory/comp 3 Student must complete at least 3 additional hours in either music theory/composition or music history/literature.
History/literature 3 Student must complete at least 3 semester hours of music literature or history as approved by his/her GPC/Chair
music elective 2 Student must complete at least 2 semester hours of music electives as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.

Mus 605 - C min 2 Student must complete Mus 605 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 623 or 624 2 Student must complete one of the following courses with a grade of C or better: Mus 623 or Mus 624.
Mus 695 - C min 2 Student must complete Mus 695 with a grade of C or better.
