The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Degree Requirements

The academic regulations for this degree program, as entered in the University of Mississippi Catalog, are in effect for the current or selected academic year and semester. The University of Mississippi reserves the right to 1) change or withdraw courses; 2) change rules for registration, instruction, and graduation; and 3) change other regulations affecting the student body at any time.

Requirement Hours Description
His 550 - C min 3 Complete His 550 with a grade of C or better.
His 797 18 Complete at least 18 hours of dissertation credit (His 797).
600-level courses 2 Student must complete at least 2 600-level courses.
1st minor exam Student must pass a written examination in his/her minor fields.
1st minor field 6 Student must complete at least 6 hours of graduate course work in each of his/her minor fields.
1st minor field GPA A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken within the first minor field.
2nd minor exam Student must pass a written examination in his/her minor fields.
2nd minor field 6 Student must complete at least 6 hours of graduate course work in each of his/her minor fields.
2nd minor field GPA A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken within the second minor field.
Foreign language Student must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language. Ordinarily, this requirement will be met by one of the following: A) a grade of B or better in a fourth-semester (202-level) language course taught at the University of Mississippi. An equivalent course that has been completed within three calendar years prior to enrollment in the graudate program will satisfy this requirement. B) A passing grade on a departmentally administered translation exam or certification from another history department that the student has passed an equivalent translation exam within three calendar years prior to enrollment in the graduate program.
Major field exam Student must pass a combined written and oral examination in his/her major field.
Oral defense Every candidate for the Ph.D. degree must successfully pass a final oral examination (defense of dissertation) administered by the student’s dissertation committee and scheduled by the Graduate School.
Research seminar 1 Student must complete one 700-level research seminar.
Submit Dissertation Student must submit a dissertation to his/her GPC/Chair. The dissertation must conform to the regulations governing style set forth in "A Manual of Thesis and Dissertations Preparations", available in the Graduate School Office. Two copies of the dissertation must be presented to the Graduate School after the final examination for the doctorate has been accepted and before the beginning of the regular examination period for the semester in which the candidate plans to graduate.
Major field GPA A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Liberal Arts Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The Dean's Office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The Dean's Office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.
