The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Specialization - French

M.A. in Modern Languages

Description

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, Spanish, and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 36

Course Requirements

Students must satisfy the requirements for either the emphasis in French, German, Spanish, or TESL.

Emphasis - Languages

Specialization - French

Description

An M.A. in Modern Languages with a specialization in French gives graduates a high proficiency in communicative skills and a deep awareness of cultures in the French-speaking world. The degree prepares students for a teaching career at a variety of levels as well as doctoral work in the discipline.

Course Requirements

M.A. students with a specialization in French must successfully complete Fr 672. Course Requirements: Three options are available. (1) The first option requires 36 hours of graduate-level coursework in French. (2) The second option requires a minimum of 24 hours of graduate-level work in French plus 6-12 hours in a subfield, subject to approval of the department. (3) The third option requires a minimum of 24 hours of graduate-level coursework in French plus 6-12 hours of credit for writing a thesis (Fr 697). Please note: Under extraordinary circumstances, a candidate may petition the French faculty to allow both a subfield and a thesis, provided s/he can make a compelling argument as to why this is necessary.

Other Academic Requirements

Students must maintain a B average in their course work or be subjected to probation and/or expulsion from the program.

The academic regulations for this degree program, as entered in the University of Mississippi Catalog, are in effect for the current or selected academic year and semester. M.A. in Modern Languages

Requirement Hours Description
24 hours course work 24 Student must complete at least 24 hours of graduate-level course work in his/her emphasis area as approved by his/her GPC/Chair. Student may choose an emphasis in French, German, Spanish, or TESL. For the French, German, and Spanish emphases, the course work must include 15 hours in the emphasis area and up to 9 hours in a minor field. The specialization in TESL requires 36 hours of graduate course work, including the 21 hour core: Ling 600; TESL 542 or 672; TESL 631, 645,647, and 695; and Engl 501 or 592.
Select an emphasis Students must enroll in one of the M.A. in Modern Language specialization areas: French, German, Spanish, or TESL.
GPA requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Liberal Arts Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The Dean's Office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The Dean's Office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.

Specialization - French

Requirement Hours Description
Thesis vs non-thesis Student may elect a thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option includes completing 6 hours of thesis credit and submitting a thesis to the student's GPC/Chair. The non-thesis option includes completing at least 12 additional hours of graduate-level course work as approved by the student's GPC/Chair.
Add'l course work 12 For the non-thesis option, the student must complete 12 additional hours of graduate-level course work within his/her emphasis area. The course work must include at least 9 additional hours in his/her major emphasis area and up to 3 additional hours in his/her minor field. All courses must be approved by the student's GPC/Chair.
FR 697 6 For the thesis option, the student must complete at least 6 hours of thesis credit (FR 697).
Submit Thesis For the thesis option, the student must submit a thesis to his/her GPC/Chair. Regulations governing the style, format, paper, abstract and other matters may be found in "A Manual of Thesis and Dissertations" available in the Graduate School Office. After the oral examination has been accepted, the student must present to the Graduate School two unbound copies of the thesis. A copy of the abstract and the thesis binding fee receipt must accompany the copies of the thesis.
