UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Pharmaceutics

M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Description

The M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences can be completed with an emphasis in environmental toxicology, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, or pharmacy administration.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 31

Course Requirements

Requirements for each emphasis area are given in the respective program description sections. Each emphasis area requires students to complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of course work and 6 hours of thesis.

Emphasis - Pharmaceutics

Description

The M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences with emphasis in pharmaceutics deals with the science of dosage form design and embraces all facets of the process of turning a new chemical entity into a medication that can be safely and effectively used by patients.

Course Requirements

The M.S. in pharmaceutical sciences with an emphasis in pharmaceutics requires the following courses: 1. Seminar in Current Pharmaceutical Topics (Phar 543, 544). 2. Statistics and Experimental Design (Bisc 504 or Psy 501). 3. Analytical Pharmaceutics (Phar 535). 4. Pharmacokinetics (Phar 546 or Phar 660). 5. Product Development (Phar 649).

In addition, two of the following electives are required: 1. Advanced Pharmaceutics I (Phar 641). 2. Advanced Pharmaceutics II (Phar 642). 3. Stability of Pharmaceutical Systems (Phar 644). 4. Surface Phenomena (Ch E 545 or Phar 645). 5. Advanced Pharmacokinetics (Phar 660). 6. Applied Pharmaceutics (Phar 650).

Additional courses may be required by the student’s graduate adviser and/or advisory committee. If a required course is unavailable, the Department of Pharmaceutics graduate faculty may approve an alternative course for a particular student.

Other Academic Requirements

A thesis based upon experimental work in the general area of pharmaceutics is also required.

Prior to the student's thesis defense, the student must have a minimum of one completed manuscript ready for submission to a referred journal for publication.

Note: An applicant may enter the Ph.D. program directly, without having to enroll in the Master's Program.

M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Requirement Hours Description
Select an emphasis Student must enroll in one of the M.S. in Pharamecuetical Sciences emphasis areas: medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacognosy, environmental toxicology, pharmacy administration or pharmacology/toxicology,
GPA requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Pharmacy Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The dean's office will make the final certification that the student qualifies for graduation. The dean's office will also determine if other university or school requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.

Emphasis - Pharmaceutics

Requirement Hours Description
Bisc 504 or Psy 501 4 Complete at least one of the following courses with a grade of C or better: Bisc 504 or Psy 501.
Phar 535 - C min 3 Complete Phar 535 with a grade of C or better.
Phar 543 - C min 1 Complete Phar 543 with a grade of C or better.
Phar 544 - C min 1 Complete Phar 544 with a grade of C or better.
Phar 546 or 660 3 Complete at least one of the following courses with a grade of C or better: Phar 546 or Phar 660.
Phar 649 - C min 3 Complete Phar 649 with a grade of C or better.
Phar 697 6 Complete at least 6 hours of thesis (Phar 697).
Elective courses 8 Complete at least two of the following electives with a grade of C or better in each: Phar 641, Phar 642, Phar 644, Ch E 545, Phar 660, or Phar 650.
Manuscript Prior to the student's thesis defense, the student must have a minimum of one completed manuscript ready for submission to a referred journal for publication.
Submit Thesis Student must submit a thesis to his/her GPC/Chair. Regulations governing the style, format, paper, abstract and other matters may be found in "A Manual of Thesis and Dissertations" available in the Graduate School Office. After the oral examination has been accepted, the student must present to the Graduate School two unbound copies of the thesis. A copy of the abstract and the thesis binding fee receipt must accompany the copies of the thesis.
Thesis defense Student must orally defend his/her thesis.
