The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Ph.D. in Music

Description

The program leading to the Ph.D. in music with emphasis in music education is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced study in preparation for university teaching, research, and other leadership roles in music education. The program is individualized to fit each student’s interest and background and includes a 9-credit elective area in music or music education.

Area of Concentration:

The Ph.D. degree in music is offered with an emphasis in music education only.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 57

Goals/Mission Statement

The Ph.D. in music with an emphasis in music education is designed to give the student advanced training in research and methodology appropriate for teaching at the university level.

Course Requirements

Research-12 credits Must include courses in experimental research, historical research, observation research and statistics.

Music Education Methods-6 credits Two courses selected from Mus 551, Orff Level I; Mus 536, Kodaly in American Music Education; Mus 524, Advanced Choral Directing; Mus 523, Advanced Band Directing.

Music Education Foundations–6 credits Mus 548-Psychology of Music, Mus 619-Foundations of Music Education

Music History-3 credits

Music Theory-3 credits

Elective Area–9 credits May include choral music, applied pedagogy, music theory, music history/literature, or music education

Dissertation–18 credits

Other Academic Requirements

At least 57 hours beyond the master's degree is considered a minimum program. The equivalent of Mus 575, World Music, and Mus 620, Introduction to Research in Music Education, are required at the master's level and, if the student has not had these or similar courses, they must enroll in them before completion of the Ph.D.

Dissertation Requirements: A minimum registration of 18 semester hours is required for the dissertation. After passing the comprehensive examinations, the student must submit a project topic suitable for a doctoral dissertation in the form known as the prospectus. The prospectus must be approved by the advisory committee. The prospectus advisory committee shall consist of two members of the music education faculty and one faculty member from the 9 credit elective area. Once the prospectus is approved, the dissertation committee will consist of two members of the music education faculty, one additional faculty member from the music department and a fourth member from the university faculty outside the music department.

The academic regulations for this degree program, as entered in the University of Mississippi Catalog, are in effect for the current or selected academic year and semester. The University of Mississippi reserves the right to 1) change or withdraw courses; 2) change rules for registration, instruction, and graduation; and 3) change other regulations affecting the student body at any time.

Ph.D. in Music

Requirement Hours Description
Mus 797 18 Student must complete at least 18 hours of dissertation credit (MUS 797).
Oral defense Every candidate for the Ph.D. degree must successfully pass a final oral examination (defense of dissertation) administered by the student’s dissertation committee and scheduled by the Graduate School.
Select an emphasis Student must enroll in the Ph.D. in Music emphasis area of Music Education.
Submit Dissertation Student must submit a dissertation to his/her GPC/Chair. The dissertation must conform to the regulations governing style set forth in "A Manual of Thesis and Dissertations Preparations", available in the Graduate School Office. Two copies of the dissertation must be presented to the Graduate School after the final examination for the doctorate has been accepted and before the beginning of the regular examination period for the semester in which the candidate plans to graduate.
Liberal Arts Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The Dean's Office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The Dean's Office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.
Grade requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.

Mus 548 - C min 3 Student must complete Mus 548 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 551,536,524,523 6 Student must complete two of the following courses: Mus 523, Mus 524, Mus 536, or Mus 551. Each course must be complete with a grade of C or better.
Mus 619 - C min 3 Student must complete Mus 619 with a grade of C or better.
music electives 9 Student must complete at least 9 hours of music electives as approved by his/her GPC/Chair. These courses may include choral music, applied pedagogy, music theory, music history/literature, or music education.
music history 3 Student must complete at least 3 hours of music history courses as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.
music theory 3 Student must complete at least 3 hours of music theory courses as approved by his/her GPC/Chair.
Research courses 12 Student must complete 12 hours of research as approved by his/her GPC/Chair. Must include courses in experimental research, historical research, observation research and statistics.
Masters in Music A master's degree in music or music education from a recognized institution is required.
