M.Ed. in Counselor Education
Description
The M.Ed. in counselor education must be completed with either an option in school counseling or community counseling. The program requires satisfactory completion of courses and course experiences, development of basic counseling skills, performance in practicum and internship, and demonstration of specific clinical competencies beyond class requirements.

Goals/Mission Statement
The general objective of the M.Ed. in counseling is to prepare students to be professional counselors. The counselor education faculty believe that the development of a strong professional identity, a rich knowledge base, and expertise in the skills of counseling are essential to becoming a professional counselor. The program’s first priority is to serve the people of Mississippi by providing highly qualified counselors.

To complete the M.Ed. in counselor education, a student must complete the following core courses and also complete specific courses for either the option in school counseling or community counseling.

Other Academic Requirements
Along with the scholarship aspect of the program, which is the mastery of academic content, the master’s program in counselor education requires students to demonstrate competencies in the core competency areas outlined in the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) 2001 Standards.
All master's degree students in the counselor education program are required to pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE). Students will retake the CPCE until they can achieve a passing score.
