Overview

The Department of Mathematics offers a minor, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematics.

Academics & Admissions

Undergraduate Studies

Courses that meet the mathematics requirement for the B.A., B.M., and B.F.A. degrees in the College of Liberal Arts are the mathematics courses at the 1000 level or above except for MATH 2451 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I and MATH 2452 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers II. MATH 1150 Elementary Statistics has no prerequisite and is recommended for any non-mathematics major. After completing MATH 2611 Unified Calculus & Analytic Geometry I with a C or higher, students may not receive credit for MATH 1210 College Algebra, MATH 1250 Basic Mathematics for Science & Eng, or MATH 2511 Calculus for Business, Econ., & Accy. I.

No student may enroll in a mathematics course unless he or she has a grade of C or higher in all prerequisite courses. Grades lower than C in mathematics courses will not be counted toward the mathematics major, the B.A. or B.S. degree. Students who have received credit for MATH 2611 Unified Calculus & Analytic Geometry I or higher may not enroll in MATH 1210 College Algebra, MATH 1230 Trigonometry, or MATH 1250 Basic Mathematics for Science & Eng.

Graduate Studies

For the M.A., M.S., and Ph.D., the full four-semester sequence of calculus is prerequisite to all graduate courses. Prerequisite to a graduate program in mathematics is a background preparation in mathematics equivalent to the undergraduate major in the College of Liberal Arts; that is, courses through calculus, supplemented by at least 18 hours in mathematics at a higher level that are to include the advanced calculus sequence.

For the M.A., M.S., and Ph.D., a reading knowledge of French or German is desirable for graduate study in mathematics, especially for students working toward a doctoral degree, but is not a requirement for the master's degree.

Students are generally required to participate in the teaching of mathematics as part of their graduate training. The department offers fellowships, assistantships, and other financial awards to assist graduate students in their studies.
