Overview

The Department of English offers a minor and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English and a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in creative writing.

Academics & Admissions

Undergraduate Studies

See the degree requirements under Programs.

Students must apply for admission to the BFA Creative Writing program. In addition to the UM undergraduate application, first-year students should submit their application on the Department of English website.

  1. Artist's Statement: up to one page (double-spaced) describing goals/specific interests in creative writing and why applicant is interested in being a part of the B.F.A. in Creative Writing program at the University of Mississippi.
  2. Writing Sample: five or more pages (double-spaced) of any genre of writing. Sample may include work(s) from one or more of the following genres: fiction; poetry; creative nonfiction, including memoir and journalism; screenwriting and playwriting; graphic prose; lyrics; or other genre.
  3. Contact information for two references.

In the spring, current students will be invited to apply for sophomore or junior entry through the Department of English website. Prior to application, students will be advised to meet with the director of the B.F.A. program to determine how acceptance would affect their time to degree.

Graduate Studies

Admission to the M.A., M.F.A., and the Ph.D. is competitive and based upon undergraduate transcripts, three recommendations, and a writing sample. In addition, the Ph.D. applicant must have received a bachelor's or master's degree in English or its equivalent from a compatible institution and must satisfy the Graduate School's requirements for admission to doctoral study.
