Overview
The School of Education offers academic programs that prepare professionals for teaching and leading in a variety of educational settings in the fields of Counselor Education, Higher Education, K-12 Educational Leadership, and Teacher Education. Undergraduate programs give emphasis to graduates meeting requirements for initial licensure as teachers in early childhood, elementary education, health and physical education, secondary education (English, math, biology, chemistry, physics and social sciences), and special education. Graduate programs support students in building upon previous studies to advance employment and expertise as professional educators filling a variety of roles to include principal or assistant principal, curriculum leader or specialist, school or mental counselor, campus administrator, or behavior analyst, to name a few. In addition to academic programs, the School of Education supports centers that utilize research and professional expertise to improve student learning, serving well beyond the campus community. These centers include the Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction, the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, the National Center for School-University Partnerships, and the Willie Price Laboratory School.
History/Mission/Purpose
Established in 1903, the School of Education seeks to prepare and engage reflective professionals who create, use and share knowledge in partnership with individuals and communities to serve Mississippi and beyond. Dedicated to the high-quality preparation of educators who serve in a variety of educational settings and professional roles, the School of Education makes a significant contribution to the university's mission to transform lives, communities, and the world by providing opportunities for the people of Mississippi and beyond through excellence in learning, discovery, healthcare, and engagement.
The School of Education strives to prepare candidates who can positively impact society and effectively interact with all learners as advocates, skilled problem solvers, effective, communicators, lifelong learners, and technology innovators. More than that, the vision of the School of Education is to enhance the lives of individuals and communities to advance education through innovative practice by professionals who lead and inspire others.
Accreditation
The School of Education is accredited by the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The School of Education also holds membership in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) and the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). The Counselor Education programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Willie Price Laboratory School is accreditated by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
Other Information
Certification - Graduates from the teacher preparation program of the school meet all degree and course requirements for teaching licensure in Mississippi. Additionally, passing scores on the Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching, and Praxis II: Specialty Area Test are required. Students interested in applying for licensure in other states are encouraged to (a) meet Mississippi standards and apply for reciprocity in another state and/or (b) research the specific state guidelines and follow accordingly while also meeting education degree requirements. Students are responsible for filing their licensure applications, including all required materials, directly to the state licensure office in which they are applying.
Field Experience/Clinical Practice - Education students participate in a progression of field experiences and clinical practice throughout the program designed to provide a varied and diverse scope of experience. Each teacher education student is required to earn a minimum of 9 semester hours in supervised student teaching.
Academics & Admissions
Admission Policies
Admissions Policies: The Teacher Education Program in the School of Education is composed of three phases. The first phase is the "Core Curriculum." Candidates complete the core curriculum during the freshman and sophomore years. The second phase is the "Professional Education Core." Candidates usually enter this phase at the end of the spring semester of the sophomore year or at the end of the fall semester of the junior year. Before going forward into any of the professional education courses beyond EDCI 3520 Education, Society, & the K-12 Learner, candidates must be admitted to Phase II. The third phase is "Student Teaching." Successful completion of background check is required prior to any field experience.
Note: Admission standards and the programs' curricula are subject to change due to mandates from accreditation agencies and the Mississippi Department of Education. Therefore, it is important for all students to meet with School of Education advisers in the Student Advising and Field Experience office for the most recent information on teacher education programs.
Admission requirements for graduate programs in the School of Education vary by degree and program. Applicants must meet applicable Graduate School requirements as well as any additional admission criteria established by the individual graduate program. Prospective graduate students should consult the requirements for their specific program and the School of Education Graduate Studies Office for current admission information.
Academic Regulations
Program Completion Requirements
All students must successfully complete program degree requirements approved by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. Applicants for degrees in education must have earned at least 30 semester hours of credit in courses taken from the School of Education at The University of Mississippi.
Advising
Advisory services for undergraduate students are provided during priority registration and regular registration through the Student Advising and Field Experience (SAFE) Office. The SAFE Office advising team provides academic, career, and professional information to assist undergraduate students in planning a program of study in their chosen degree areas and identifying and registering for appropriate courses to meet degree requirements. Undergraduate student records are maintained in the SAFE Office.
Graduate students are assigned faculty advisors through the School of Education Graduate Studies Office. Faculty advisors provide guidance in planning programs of study, selecting appropriate coursework, and meeting degree requirements. Graduate student records are maintained in the SOE Graduate Studies Office.
While students are encouraged to meet regularly with their advisors, it is ultimately each student’s responsibility to ensure that all degree requirements are met.
