AI in Communications Minor

Program Description

The minor in AI in communication is an interdisciplinary program open to all
majors that teaches how AI methods work, how to design and evaluate AI-assisted
workflows for real communication tasks, and how to apply legal and ethical
standards around accuracy, attribution, copyright, transparency, and audience
impact. Students choose this minor to develop practical, portfolio-ready skills
and stand out in roles across journalism, media, marketing, public affairs, and
related fields, where strong AI literacy is now expected.

Through SJNM 2010 AI in Media and Communication, CISE 1005 Foundations of Artificial Intelligence, CSCI 1003 Introduction to Computational Media, and SJNM 4996 , all students learn how standard AI methods function
at a high level, how to design and evaluate AI-assisted workflows for real
communication tasks, and how to apply legal and ethical standards related to
accuracy, attribution, copyright, transparency, and audience impact.

Electives (6 credits) will allow students to extend the core by deepening data
and analytics, writing and editing with AI, ethics and law, media strategy, and
applications, or additional programming and design. Because elective choices
vary, the program’s core outcomes rest on the required courses, while electives
broaden or deepen that base according to a student’s goals.
