The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

B.S. in Medical Technology (3+1)

Description

The B.S. in medical technology (3 + 1 program) prepares students for a career that plays an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Medical technologists examine and analyze body fluids and cells, usually in a laboratory setting. This degree is awarded by the University of Mississippi through a contractual agreement with North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) in Tupelo.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 120

Course Requirements

Students must complete general degree requirements for the College of Liberal Arts prior to beginning the professional clinical year. (Presently, only one institution is approved as an affiliate in the 3 + 1 program, the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.) A grade of C or better must be obtained in the prerequisite courses listed below with a minimum 2.6 GPA, and students must apply to be selected. There is no guarantee of admission. Please note that NMMC gives preference to qualified Mississippi residents in their selection of 12 students per year. The deadline for applying to the program through NMMC is typically mid-December the year prior to entry. Students are awarded 33 semester hours of 400-level course work for successfully completing their professional year at NMMC; thus, a minimum of 87 semester hours must be earned prior to leaving the University of Mississippi including all prerequisites below. No tuition is charged by NMMC for clinical year studies. Selection criteria are detailed on NMMC’s website.

**The courses may be chosen from African American studies, anthropology, classical civilization, economics, gender studies, history, Liba 202, philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, sociology, and Southern studies. At least 6 hours must be chosen from among the social sciences, which consists of anthropology, economics, Liba 203, political science, psychology, and sociology.

Students admitted into the medical technology program at North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) will be registered for the following courses at the University of Mississippi during their 12-month clinical year. In order to receive a B.S. in medical technology from the University of Mississippi, students must complete all classes below with a C or better. Students will apply for August graduation and sit for the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification exam from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) following successful completion of required courses.
