His 389: Samurai and Cinema
This course explores the transformation of the bushido (way of the
warrior) ethos from the late sixteenth century to the present through
film and text. The class will examine both seminal primary
textual documents and movies as we explore two central themes;
the historical reality of the samurai and the construction of
samurai mythology both in Japan and the West on screen.
