UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES


The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

B.M. in Music

Description

The B.M. in music is offered for students seeking a university education that includes preparation for careers in music teaching or performance. The B.M. degree is available in the following emphases: music performance and music education.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 124

The general education/core requirements for the B.M. degree are different for the two emphasis areas. See the information given in the individual emphasis descriptions.

Course Requirements

To complete the B.M. degree, a student must satisfy the requirements for either a music performance emphasis or a music education emphasis.

Emphasis - Music Performance

Description

The B.M. in music with emphasis in music performance prepares students to become professional musicians (performing as woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instrumentalists, pianists or vocalists) and/or for graduate or professional school. This emphasis can be completed with a concentration (option) in piano, instrumental, or vocal as principal instrument.

One semester each of Elementary Italian I (3 hours) and its corequisite

Elementary Italian II (3 hours) and its corequisite Practical Review of
Elem Italian I (1 hour) or Elementary German II (3 hours) and its
corequisite Practical Review of Elem German II (1 hour).

Course Requirements

Students in the B.M. with emphasis in music performance must complete the course requirements for either the concentration (option) in piano, instrumental, or vocal as principal instrument.

Other Academic Requirements

A grade of C or higher is required on all music courses applied toward the degree. Students must earn at least 18 hours of their major courses in residence.

First Year Writing I 3 Complete Engl 101, Hon 101, Writ 100 or Writ 101 with a passing grade.
First Year Writing II 3 Complete one of the following courses with a passing grade: Engl 102, Liba 102, Writ 102 or Hon 102.
2 associated science labs 2 Successfully complete at least two science laboratory courses.
3 hrs math 100+ 3 Successfully complete 3 hours of Math at the 100 level or above except for Math 245 and Math 246.
6 hrs history 6 Complete 6 hours of History with a passing grade.
6-8 hrs science 6 Complete 6-8 hours of natural science courses with labs from the following areas: biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or astronomy.
3 hrs literature survey 3 Complete 3 hours of literature survey with a passing grade. Choose from the following courses: Engl 221, Engl 222, Engl 223, Engl 224, Engl 225, or Engl 226.
AH 101 3 Complete AH 101 with a passing grade.

Major Requirements

Major instrument residence 4 All students must complete at least two semesters of applied study on a single major instrument at or above the 300 level at the University of Mississippi.

Emphasis - Music Performance

6 hrs modern/ancient language 200+ 6 Successfully complete at least 6 hours at the 200 level or above in one modern or ancient language.
Mus 100 6 Student must complete at least 6 semester hours of Mus 100.
Mus 104 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 104 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 105 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 105 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 106 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 106 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 205 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 205 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 206 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 206 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 301 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 301 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 302 - C min 3 Successfully complete Mus 302 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 305 - C min 2 Successfully complete Mus 305 with a grade of C or better.
Mus 347 - C min 1 Successfully complete Mus 347 with a grade of C or better.
Add'l music theory 1 Successfully complete one of the following courses with a grade of C or better: Mus 505, Mus 506, Mus 507, Mus 508, Mus 512, or Mus 514.
