UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES


The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Track - Therapeutic Recreation

B.A.P.R.M in Park & Recreation Mgmt.

Description

The B.A.R.A. degree program is designed to develop skills preparatory to leadership and supervisory roles in a variety of leisure service careers, including municipal, outdoor, therapeutic, military, church, youth, commercial/tourism, and industrial.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 124

General Education Requirements

See the General Education/Core Curriculum for the School of Applied Sciences.

An addditional 27 hours is required in the following related subjects: Psy 301 or FCS 323; Mktg 351; 6 hours from Mgmt 371, Mgmt 383, or Mgmt 391; HP 302; HP 191; CSCI 191; 3 hours of history; and Speech 102 or 105.

Course Requirements

The B.A.R.A. degree requires 39 semester hours of RA courses: RA 194, 200, 262, 301, 302, 332, 375, 425, 471, 391, 392, 400, and 401.

Other Academic Requirements

Students must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the professional PRM core courses presented for their degree.

All PRM majors must complete either the 12-hour therapeutic recreation track (see requirements listed under the track) or one of the following minors: biological science, international studies, economics, English, geology, mass media and communications, political science, psychology, public policy leadership, accountancy, business administration, sociology, a modern language, or other minor approved by an academic adviser.

Track - Therapeutic Recreation

Course Requirements

The therapeutic recreation specialization requires the following 19 hours:

PRM 372, PRM 473, PRM 574, PSY 311, Bisc 206 or 207, and 3-hour elective (must be approved by advisor and chosen from PSY, SOC, SW, ES 490 or PRM 490).

First Year Writing II 3 Complete one of the following courses with a passing grade: Engl 102, Liba 102, Writ 102 or Hon 102.
Engl 250 3 Complete Engl 250 with a passing grade.
Psy 201 3 Complete Psy 201 with a passing grade.
Soc 101 3 Complete Soc 101 with a passing grade.
3 hrs statistics course 3 Sucessfully complete a statistic course from the following list of courses: Math 115, Econ 230, Bus 230 or Psy 202.
3 hrs fine arts 3 Complete 3 hours in the area of fine or performing arts. Choose from art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. Acceptable freshman or sophommore-level courses are: AH 101, AH 102, AH 201, AH 202; Music 101, Music 102, Music 103, Music 104, Music 105; Dance 200; and Theatre 201.
3 hrs literature 200+ 3 Complete 3 hours of literature at the 200 level or higher with a passing grade.

Additional science lab 1 Successfully complete an additional science lab.
Additional science course 3 Complete 3-4 hours of natural science courses with labs from the following areas: biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or astronomy.
Human biology course 3 Successfully complete either Bisc 102, Bisc 160, Bisc 206 or Bisc 207 with a passing grade.
Human biology lab 1 Successfully complete the accompanying human biology lab.
3 hrs humanities or fine arts 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours in humanities chosen from the following areas: African American Studies, classical civilization, gender studies, philosophy, modern or ancient languages, religion, or southern studies. Or, successfully complete 3 credit hours in the area of fine arts chosen from the following areas: art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.
6 hrs of management courses 6 Complete at least 6 hours of management courses. Courses must be chosen from the following: Mgmt 371, Mgmt 383 or Mgmt 391.
3 hrs history 3 Successfully complete 3 credit hours of history.
3 hrs Math 121 or higher 3 Successfully complete Math 121 or a higher level math with a passing grade.
Spch 102 or 105 3 Complete Spch 102 or Spch 105 with a passing grade.
Psy 301 or FCS 323 3 Successfully complete one of the following courses: Psy 301 or FCS 323.
Mktg 351 3 Complete Mktg 351 with a passing grade.
