The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - MCJ Criminal Justice

M.C.J. in Criminal Justice

Description

The Master of Criminal Justice (M.C.J.) provides a person with educational experiences beyond the bachelor’s degree to enhance skills and knowledge so as to allow graduates of the program to work in the field of criminal justice, as well as attend doctoral programs. As part of the degree, two emphases are offered: criminal justice and homeland security.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 36

Course Requirements

The M.C.J. is a 36-graduate-hour program. All students must complete the 12 hours of core courses (CJ 600, 635, 645, and 655), 9 hours from either the criminal justice or homeland security emphasis area, 9 hours of electives (from the courses included in this program or up to 6 hours of graduate courses either from another department or institution approved by legal studies graduate program coordinator and the department chair), and 6 hours of program completion options of: 1) thesis (CJ 697, 6 credit hours); 2) practicum (CJ 690, 6 credit hours); or 3) non-thesis/non-practicum option of taking at a minimum of 6 more additional credit hours of criminal justice elective classes.

Other Academic Requirements

Students must pass an oral comprehensive examination for the thesis and practicum program completion options and a written comprehensive exam for the non-thesis/non-practicum option (i.e., completing at least 6 additional credit hours of criminal justice elective courses).

Emphasis - MCJ Criminal Justice

Description

The M.C.J. with emphasis in criminal justice prepares a graduate for a variety of criminal justice and related positions.

Course Requirements

In addition to the core, elective, and the program completion option requirements, the M.C.J. degree with emphasis in criminal justice requires completion of three of the following courses (i.e., 9 credit hours):

M.C.J. in Criminal Justice

Major Requirements

Requirement Hours Description
CJ 500 - C min 3 Complete CJ 500 with a grade of C or better.
CJ 635 - C min 3 Complete CJ 635 with a grade of C or better.
CJ 645 - C min 3 Complete CJ 645 with a grade of C or better.
CJ 655 - C min 3 Complete CJ 655 with a grade of C or better.
Comprehensive exam Student must pass a comprehensive examination.
Elective courses 9 Student must complete at least 9 hours of electives from the courses included in this program or graduate courses approved by the M.C.J. program director. Each course must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Select an emphasis Student must enroll in one of the MCJ emphasis areas (Criminal Justice or Homeland Security).
GPA requirements A cumulative average of not less than 3.0 (B) must be achieved in all graduate work taken.
Applied Science Dean's approval This Degree Audit program is an advising tool only. The student must still apply for a degree by returning a completed Degree Application Form to the dean's office before the last day to add classes in the semester preceding the semester in which the stuent expects to graduate. The dean's office will make the final certification that the courses listed on the application qualify the student for graduation. The dean's office will also determine if other university requirements (GPA, etc.) have been met.

Requirement Hours Description
Thesis vs non-thesis Student may elect a thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option includes completing 6 hours of thesis credit and submitting a thesis to the student's GPC/Chair. The non-thesis option includes completing 6 hours of practicum credit.
CJ 690 6 For the nonthesis option, student must complete at least 6 hours of practicum credit (CJ 690).
CJ 697 6 For the thesis option, student must complete at least 6 hours of thesis credit (CJ 697).
Submit Thesis For the thesis option, the student must submit a thesis to his/her GPC/Chair. Regulations governing the style, format, paper, abstract and other matters may be found in "A Manual of Thesis and Dissertations" available in the Graduate School Office. After the oral examination has been accepted, the student must present to the Graduate School two unbound copies of the thesis. A copy of the abstract and the thesis binding fee receipt must accompany the copies of the thesis.

Emphasis - MCJ Criminal Justice

9 hrs criminal justice 9 Student must complete at least 9 hours of coursework chosen from the following courses: CJ 620, CJ 625, CJ 640, or CJ 660. Each course must be completed with a grade of C or better.
